With his pants pulled up, Harry (The Houdini) Martin set the stage alight with an outstanding performance last night to clinch the opening competition. Harry played Nizaam in the final after he had had to deal with Allister in the semis, Nizaam had maybe a trickier route to the final as he had to go head to head first with Basil Munsamy and then Nicola Rossouw who had taken out pre-tournament favorite Senzo Gumede in the first round.
The win may have given Houdini a spring in his step but better yet he got the same Nizaam Davids in the first match of the round robin stage in the main event, what more can a Capetonian ask for. The round robin format can be unforgiving as the players need to focus from start to finish and like in every other star-studded event, every match, every ball, every point matters. The loss to Nicola may have been a rude awakening for Gumede who seems more focused and poised for the kill. Allister Fortuin is another dangerous player that will need to be monitored closely. The silent ones are the most lethal in most cases. No prize for guessing that Allister is from PE, at the time of writing he was already done with his first round match uprooting Nicholas Owen 4-0 when everyone else was still playing their second frames.
